How to Choose Running Shoes for a Half Marathon

Picking the right shoe for a half marathon is about matching your goal to the right type of footwear. Here's how to make the right decision.

21 April 2026

The half marathon is one of the most popular race distances in the UK — challenging enough to require proper preparation but accessible enough for runners at all levels. Shoe choice is more nuanced than for a 5K or a marathon. At 21 kilometres you need enough cushioning to stay comfortable in the second half, but you're running hard enough that responsiveness and weight genuinely matter.

Start with your goal

The right half marathon shoe depends almost entirely on what you are trying to achieve. A runner targeting a personal best at sub-5:00 per km pace needs a completely different shoe to someone running their first half marathon at a comfortable 7:00 per km.

If your goal is to complete the distance comfortably: prioritise cushioning and comfort. You will be on your feet for two hours or more and a shoe that feels good in training will serve you much better than one that is technically faster but stiff or aggressive.

If your goal is a time target: a more performance-oriented shoe will help. The faster your target pace, the more you benefit from lighter weight and better energy return.

The case for a racing shoe

If you are targeting a specific time in your half marathon — especially if you are trying to break a barrier like sub-1:45 or sub-2:00 — a carbon plate shoe will give you a measurable advantage. Research shows these shoes improve running economy by 2 to 4 percent, which at half marathon pace translates to 2 to 4 minutes.

The Nike Vaporfly 4 is the most proven option. At half marathon pace it feels punchy and propulsive, and at 21 kilometres the calf loading that concerns some marathon runners is much less of a factor. The Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 is an equally capable alternative that some runners find more comfortable at longer distances.

The mid-range performance option

Full carbon race shoes are expensive and not necessary for every runner. The Adidas Adizero Boston 13 is an excellent mid-point — it uses the same fast Lightstrike Pro foam as the Adios Pro but without a carbon plate. Many runners have set personal bests in it at a much lower price than the top-tier race shoes.

The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 is another superb option, using a nylon plate rather than carbon for a propulsive feel at a significantly lower price than full carbon models.

Comfort-first options

For runners focused on completion rather than time, the Saucony Ride 18 is one of the best half marathon shoes available. It is responsive enough not to feel sluggish but cushioned enough to remain comfortable across all 21 kilometres.

The Hoka Clifton 10 is the most popular comfort option for half marathon runners. Its rocker geometry and generous cushioning mean it handles the second half of the race well, when fatigue causes form to break down and impact increases.

Training shoe vs race day shoe

Many half marathon runners train in a comfortable daily trainer and step up to a more performance-oriented shoe on race day. This is a sensible strategy — you protect your legs in training with a forgiving shoe and then use a lighter, faster option when it counts.

If you plan to do this, make sure your race day shoe has at least 30 to 40 kilometres in it before the event. Run two or three moderate-paced sessions in it to confirm the fit and feel at race pace. Race day is not the time to discover that the shoe gives you blisters at 15 kilometres.
