Best Running Shoes for a Half Marathon

The half marathon is the perfect distance for most runners. Here are the best shoes to wear for 21km, whether you're racing or just getting round.

The half marathon sits in a sweet spot where you need both speed and endurance from your shoes. At 21km you're running hard enough that cushioning and energy return matter, but the distance is short enough that you don't need to sacrifice responsiveness for pure protection.

Racing the half marathon

If you're chasing a time, a performance shoe makes a real difference. The Nike Vaporfly 4 is equally at home in a half marathon as a full one. Its ZoomX foam and carbon plate feel punchy and propulsive at half marathon pace, and at 21km the leg-loading that concerns some marathon runners simply isn't a factor.

The Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 is the main alternative. The carbon rod construction delivers a slightly different feel to the Vaporfly's plate, with some runners finding it more controlled at higher speeds.

For a more affordable option, the Adidas Adizero Boston 13 punches well above its price. The Lightstrike Pro foam alone makes it noticeably faster than a standard trainer and many club runners have set personal bests in it.

Comfortable and capable options

The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 is the best mid-range performance shoe for half marathon runners. Its nylon plate gives a propulsive feel at a much lower price than full carbon options. A great upgrade shoe for runners stepping up from a standard trainer.

The Hoka Clifton 10 works brilliantly for runners focusing on completion rather than time. The cushioning is excellent and the Meta-Rocker geometry keeps you moving efficiently without requiring the same muscular effort as a traditional shoe.

The Brooks Ghost 16 is the reliable all-rounder. Not exciting, but consistently comfortable and well-suited to runners who want a shoe that handles training and race day without drama.

How to pick

Think about your goal pace. If you're running faster than 5:30 per km (8:50 per mile), a performance shoe will likely benefit you. If you're running at a comfortable conversational pace, focus on cushioning and comfort over speed tech.

Half marathon shoes don't need to be broken in as carefully as marathon shoes. The distance is short enough that most runners tolerate a slightly newer shoe on race day, though a couple of runs first is still sensible.
