Best Running Shoes for a Sub-2 Hour Half Marathon

Targeting the two-hour half marathon barrier? Here are the shoes that will help you get there.

1 April 2026

Sub-2 hours means running 21km at 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile). At that pace you're working hard and a good shoe will genuinely help. You need energy return, reasonable weight, and enough cushioning to feel fresh at the 18km mark.

The case for carbon

At sub-2 pace, carbon plate shoes are worth considering. The proven 2 to 4 percent economy improvement translates to 2 to 4 minutes at this distance — often the difference between sub-2 and missing it.

The Nike Vaporfly 4 is the most proven option. If you've been running in a standard trainer and you're sitting just above 2 hours, switching to the Vaporfly is one of the most reliable ways to break the barrier.

Budget-friendly alternatives

The Adidas Adizero Boston 13 sits at a lower price than full carbon options and still uses the fast Lightstrike Pro foam. For runners close to 2 hours, this is often the most cost-effective upgrade.

Saucony's Endorphin Speed 4 uses a nylon plate rather than carbon, making it significantly cheaper while still giving a propulsive feel at race pace. An excellent first step into performance footwear.

The Hoka Mach 6 is a lighter, faster option from Hoka. Less cushioning than the Clifton but more responsive and lower weight, it works well for faster training and race efforts.

Don't overlook the basics

Whatever shoe you choose, run in it before race day. Two or three runs at easy pace is enough to check the fit and spot any hot spots. Race socks matter too: a thin, moisture-wicking pair will keep your feet comfortable for the full 21km.
