How to Choose Your Next Running Shoe

With hundreds of options available, choosing the right running shoe can feel overwhelming. This guide simplifies the process.

The perfect running shoe is the one that fits your foot, suits your running style, and matches what you need it for. Here's a simple framework to narrow down your options.

Step 1: know your foot type

Neutral feet (normal arch) suit the widest range of shoes. Most cushioned trainers are designed for neutral runners.

Flat feet or overpronation means your foot rolls inward on landing. Stability shoes like the Asics GT-2000 or Brooks Adrenaline GTS help correct this and reduce injury risk.

High arches often need extra cushioning as the foot is rigid and doesn't absorb shock naturally. Max-cushion shoes like the Hoka Bondi work well.

Step 2: match the shoe to your running

Daily training shoes should be your main investment. They need to be durable, comfortable, and suitable for most of your runs.

Race day shoes can be lighter and more performance-focused, but they don't need to last as long. Carbon plate shoes fall into this category.

Trail shoes are a separate category entirely. Don't try to use road shoes on muddy or technical terrain.

Step 3: get the fit right

Running shoes should have a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Your feet swell during runs, and a tight fit will cause black toenails.

If possible, try shoes in the afternoon when your feet are slightly larger. Always try both shoes and run a few steps in the shop.

Half sizes matter. Many runners find they need a half size up from their normal shoe size in certain brands.
