Best Running Shoes for a 5K
5km is short, fast, and demands a lot from your shoes. Here are the best options for parkrun, track 5Ks, and race day.

5km might be the shortest distance on the road race calendar but it's also the most intense. You're running at near maximum effort for 15 to 40 minutes depending on your pace. Your shoes need to be light, responsive, and comfortable enough to handle speed.
Do carbon plates work for 5K?
Yes, and possibly more than at any other distance. The faster your pace, the more you benefit from energy return mechanics. If you're chasing a 5K PB, a carbon plate shoe like the Nike Vaporfly 4 is genuinely one of the most effective tools available.
That said, 5km races don't justify wearing out expensive carbon shoes unnecessarily. Many runners save their carbon racers for longer events and use a high-quality non-plated shoe for parkrun and training 5Ks.
The best options
Nike Vaporfly 4: The fastest 5K shoe available. Light, propulsive, and proven at every distance from 5km upwards. If you're targeting a time, this is the benchmark.
Adidas Adizero Boston 13: Excellent performance at a lower price. The Lightstrike Pro foam delivers impressive energy return without a full carbon plate. A great choice for regular parkrun use where you don't want to wear out expensive carbon.
Saucony Endorphin Speed 4: The best value performance shoe for 5K runners. The nylon plate gives a noticeably fast feel and it's significantly cheaper than full carbon options.
Hoka Mach 6: Lighter and more reactive than Hoka's cushioned trainers, the Mach 6 works well as an everyday shoe that also handles faster efforts comfortably.
Parkrun vs race day
For parkrun regulars, a versatile trainer that you can run in every week makes more sense than a carbon racer. Save the expensive shoes for targeted PB attempts. The Adidas Adizero Boston 13 or Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 give performance feel at a price you won't mind running on grass in.
