Best Women's Running Shoes for a Marathon

From carbon plate supershoes to plush endurance trainers — the best women's marathon shoes you can buy in the UK right now.

10 April 2026

Marathon day deserves the right shoe. Whether you're chasing a time or just want to finish feeling strong, shoe choice genuinely matters across 42km. Here are the best women's marathon shoes currently available in the UK.

Racing: carbon plate supershoes

The Nike Vaporfly 4 is the benchmark women's race shoe. Research shows carbon plate supershoes improve running economy by 2 to 4 percent — at marathon pace, that can mean 6 to 10 minutes off your finish time.

The Saucony Endorphin Pro 5 is a serious rival. Its PWRRUN HG foam and full-length carbon plate deliver a fast, efficient ride that some women prefer to the Vaporfly's more aggressive feel. It also fits slightly wider feet better.

The Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is designed specifically for heel strikers — a pattern more common in women than men. If you land on your heel rather than your midfoot, this shoe may actually outperform the Vaporfly for you.

Comfort and endurance

For women running their first marathon or prioritising finishing over finishing fast, the Hoka Clifton 10 is the most reliable choice. Its maximal cushioning protects joints across all 42km and the rocker geometry helps maintain forward momentum even when fatigue sets in.

The Saucony Ride 18 is another excellent option — slightly firmer than the Clifton but more versatile. Many women use it for both training and race day, which saves the expense of separate shoes.

Race day tips

Whatever shoe you choose, wear it for at least 3 or 4 long runs before race day. Carbon plate shoes in particular require adaptation — your calves work differently and you want to know how the shoe performs at race pace before you commit on the start line.

Women tend to overheat slightly less than men but still benefit from a breathable upper. All the shoes listed here prioritise ventilation, but check the specific colourways as darker uppers occasionally use denser mesh.
