Trail running shoes are a completely different beast to road shoes. You need grip, protection from rocks and roots, and durability across varied terrain. Here's what to look for and the best options currently available.
What makes a good trail shoe
Outsole grip is the most critical factor. Look for deep, multi-directional lugs for soft and muddy terrain, or shallower lugs for hard-packed or rocky trails. Salomon and Hoka both make excellent trail-specific rubber compounds.
Rock protection matters on technical terrain. A rock plate (a stiff layer between the midsole and outsole) prevents sharp stones from bruising your foot. Essential if you run on rocky ground regularly.
Upper durability is often overlooked. Trail shoes take a battering from rocks, roots, and debris. Look for reinforced toe boxes and heel counters.
Best trail shoes
Salomon Speedcross 6: The definitive muddy trail shoe. Its aggressive chevron lugs grip soft ground better than almost anything else. If you run in the UK hills in autumn and winter, this is the shoe.
Hoka Speedgoat 6: The best all-rounder for long trail distances. Maximum cushioning combined with excellent Vibram Megagrip rubber works across most terrain types. A favourite on the ultra circuit.
Saucony Peregrine 14: A lighter option for faster trail running. Less cushioning than the Speedgoat but more responsive, making it better suited to shorter, faster efforts on mixed terrain.
Altra Lone Peak 9: The go-to choice for runners who prefer a wide toe box and zero-drop platform. The natural foot position works well on long days in the mountains.
